As we know, it is not so much about what know, but who you know. I have learned that in most cases, opportunities are attached to people and relationships. Professional networking events present a great opportunity to make connections that could open doors for you in the future and allow you to open doors for others.
Although connecting with new people can be exhilarating, at the same time it can be a source of anxiety for some.
Here are a few tips on how to alleviate networking anxiety and maximize your networking experience:
1. Arrive early to the event: If possible, arriving at the event early allows you to play an active part of the event developing. For some walking into a room that is already full can be intimidating. Sometimes it helps to be a part of the event as it is forming rather than coming into a event that is already established.
2. Engage in conversation: Give your attention to each person you meet and let the conversation flow to a natural conclusion before moving on. If you are not a good conversationalist, asking questions is the key to a good conversation. Don’t allow yourself to get distracted in the midst of conversation by looking for the next person to talk to. Often, instead of paying attention to the person we are talking to, we can get caught up in thoughts like..“I don’t know anything on this topic, I hope this person likes me or I’ve go nothing to say.
3. Invest in business card: A business card that includes your full contact information is a useful tool. It conveys professionalism and aids in presenting yourself confidently. Exchanging business typically assists in a smooth transition to the end of a conversation.
4. Become a connector : Remember that you have something to offer. You may know someone who could help another person at the event get to where they want to be or know someone that could be potential clients for them. If you help enough people get what they want, you will eventually get what you want.
5. Have a goal in mind: Time is very precious. Before the event, know what you are trying to accomplish by the end of the event. Whether it is meeting a specific person you heard was going to be at the event or connecting with a certain amount of people. Someone may just ask you “what brings you to this event tonight.” Be prepared to give your answer. That may be the person you are looking for.
6. Follow up: I have been guilty of collecting business cards at networking events, but not making the time to make follow up calls or emails. I find this has been the case for many as well. Build on the initial connection made at the event and see where the relationship goes. A good way to keep track of business cards is by creating a personal network log.
Following these tips will help you maximize your next networking event. You never know who you are going to meet!
