A few years ago I was feeling stuck with a project I recently started and during a coaching session with my coach he asked me “so what’s your vision?” This was a simple yet profound question because I realized that although I was initially genuinely excited about the project, I did not have a clear vision that would help sustain my passion. Immediately after the coaching session I began crafting and writing down a vision statement for this project that I referred to often. The vision statement energized me and gave me direction on how to move forward each time I referred to it.
There are four things that a clear vision gives us:
1. Passion- Vision evokes emotion. A clear focused vision allows us to experience ahead of time the emotions associated with our anticipated future.
2. Motivation- When the vision is clear, the mundane becomes meaningful. The details become worthwhile. Vision-driven people are motivated people even when it comes to accomplishing the simplest of tasks.
3. Direction- This is a practical advantage of a clear vision. It serves are a road map. It simplifies your decision making on how to use your time, resources and energy.
4. Purpose- A vision gives you a reason to get up in the morning. The mentality of a vision-driven person is that if you don’t show up, then something important might not get done.
Reflection Questions:
What is your vision for your life?
How connected are are you to your vision?
